Cards (11)

  • How does increasing surface area increase the rate of reaction?

If an object is split into smaller objects it has more/larger surface area
This means that more particles are exposed and available for collisions so there are most collisions and a faster reaction
  • How can the volume of gas produced be measured?

    Using a gas syringe
  • What equipment is used to measure the volume of gas produced?
    Gas syringe
  • What is the independent variable of the rate of reaction surface area investigation?
The size of the chunks used e.g. limestone
  • What is the dependent variable of the rate of reaction surface area investigation?
How much gas is produced at set time intervals
  • What are the control variables of the rate of reaction surface area investigation?
    -the acid (dilute)
    -concentration/volume of acid
    -reactants
    -gas syringe
  • If the surface area of a reactant is increased:

    • more particles are exposed to the other reactant
    • there is a greater chance of particles colliding, which leads to more successful collisions per second
    • the rate of reaction increases
  • Analysis of the rate of reaction surface area investigation:
    -small pieces reacted quicker
-increasing the surface area increases the rate of reaction
  • Why do small pieces of the acid react quicker than larger pieces?
There are more particles at the surface; so there’s a larger surface area meaning particles collide more often/frequently
  • Name the equipment
    Gas syringe
  • Name the equipment
    Conical flask
