  • What is covered in the primary survey?

    A - airway
    • is it blocked? can they talk?
    • head tilt, chin lift, jaw thrust
    B - breathing
    • is it regular?
    • is it rising unevenly - one side more than the other
    C - circulation
    • any cuts or bleeding?
  • What is the chain of survival?

    Recognition - to prevent cardiac arrest
    Early CPR - to buy time
    Early defibrillation - to restart the heart
    Post resuscitation care - restore quality of life
  • When should you start CPR?

    • when you do not think there are any signs of life
    • when you don't think there is normal breathing
    If in doubt, start CPR
  • What is the process for when someone is choking?

    Mild
    • airway obstruction - ineffective cough
    • encourage cough
    Severe
    • ineffective cough
    • unconscious - start CPR
    • conscious - 5 back slaps, 5 abdominal thrusts
