Rooibos

• Rooibos is endemic to the Cederberg Mountain area in the Western Cape
• The Cederberg area has a unique combination of environmental conditions that are favourable for rooibos:

  • very cold, dry winters
  • hot summers
  • sandy, acidic soil
• The rooibos plant is used for making a herbal tea with a distinctive flavour and red colour
• It is a perennial shrub with fine, green, needle-like leaves
• The plant belongs to the legume family and has yellow, orange, white or blue flowers
