    Stoics elaborated a detailed taxonomy of virtue into four main types:
    wisdom
    justice
    courage
    moderation
  • wisdom

    Application: A wise person understands the nature of the world, including the distinction between what is within their control and what is not. This virtue helps individuals make informed decisions that lead to a good and fulfilling life.
  • justice
    • Definition: Justice is the virtue of fairness and moral righteousness. It involves treating others with respect, integrity, and honesty.
    • Application: Stoics believe that justice is essential for social harmony and community well-being. It involves recognizing the interconnectedness of all people and acting in ways that promote the common good.
  • courage
    • Definition: Courage is the ability to confront fear, pain, and adversity with strength and determination. It is not the absence of fear, but the capacity to act rightly despite it.
    • Application: Stoic courage enables individuals to face challenges, make difficult decisions, and stand firm in their values and beliefs. It allows one to endure hardships and strive for virtue even in tough circumstances.
  • modernation
    • Definition: Moderation refers to self-control and balance in all aspects of life. It involves finding the right measure in desires, actions, and emotions.
    • Application: This virtue helps individuals avoid excess and maintain harmony within themselves. It encourages individuals to enjoy pleasures without becoming enslaved by them and to respond to life's challenges with equanimity.
