Wanted to maintain Britain's naval supremacy
They wanted land for their empire
They wanted to keep Germany as a trading partner
The terms of the Treaty of Versailles were: Germany was to pay £6.6 billion in reparations (payments to the victors) to Allies, Germany was to lose 13% of its land, Germany was to lose 12.5% of its population and Germany had to accept all the blame for the war (Article 231, the 'War Guilt Clause')
