L4.1: Overview of the Skeletal System

• Consists of:

  ○ Bones - center of the system; skeleton

  ○ Joints - articulation

  ○ Cartilages

  ○ Ligaments - bone to bone
• Divided into two parts:

  ○ Axial skeleton - makes up the longitudinal axis of the body (80 bones)

  ○ Appendicular skeleton - upper and lower appendages; 2 girdles that attach appendages to the main axis of the body (126 bones)
