respiration

Cards (11)

  • define what respiration is

the process by which chemical energy stored in glucose is released
  • how is ATP linked to ADP + Pi?

ATP is made form 1 adenosine + 3 inorganic phosphate (Pi) groups
  • Give examples of where ATP is required in the body

    cell division, muscle cell contraction
  • what is the number of ATP produced from glucose --> pyruvate breakdown?

    2 ATP
  • what is one glucose broken down to?
    2 pyruvate
  • when does fermentation occur?
    when oxygen is not present
  • what are the products of fermentation in animal cells?

    lactate and 2 ATP
  • what are the products of fermentation in plant (and yeast) cells?

    Ethanol and carbon dioxide.
  • what 3 different between aerobic respiration and fermentation?

Aerobic respiration requires oxygen and fermentation does not. fermentation produces 2 ATP and aerobic respiration produces a large number of ATP. Aerobic respiration produces carbon dioxide, water and energy however fermentation produces lactate (animal cells one)
  • where does fermentation occur?

    in the cytoplasm
  • where does aerobic respiration occur?

    in the mitochondria
