Seperable verbs

• Made up of 2 parts:

  • prefix (goes to the end)
  • verb

  eg:

  einkaufen (to shop)

  Ich kaufe jeden Tag ein.
• After a subordinate conjunction (ie dass, weil), they join together at the end
• Most common seperable prefixes: 


  • Ab____= taking something away (ABnehmen= to decrease)
  • An____= at or on (ANlesen= to read up on )
  • Auf____= up (AUFwaschen= to wash up)
  • Aus____= out (AUSfahren= to drive out)
  • Ein____= in (EINnehmen= to take in, swallow)
  • Mit____= with (MITnehmen= to take with you)
  • Um____= to change ( UMfahren= to take a detour)
  • Zu____= adding to it (ZUnehmen= to increase/gain)
