Equality

• Socialists believe that social equality upholds the ideas of justice and fairness that are taken away when people compete against each other
• Socialists do not believe that people are naturally equal in skills but do believe that each person plays a role in society and therefore should receive an equal reward - Marx "From each according to his ability, to each according to society"
• Socialists reject natural hierarchies. They believe that each individual has the potential to take up any position within society to which he or she may aspire
• Socialists believe in equality of opportunity. All individuals should have access to the same life chances
