Burning mouth

• what is it?

  burning sensation in the mouth, stinging or pain. Mucosa appears clinically normal with absence of local or systemic disease or alteration
• common in middle age females
• aetiology unknown maybe form of neuropathic pain, manifestation of somatization, variety of psychological features and personality disorders
• investigation:

  • history of complaint
  • SH, MH, DH
  • IOE and EOE
  • special tests?
• diagnosis by exclusion - no local or systemic factors
• tx?


  • reassurance
  • drug therapy: clonazepam, amitryptyline
  • CBT
