Atoms, Elements and Compounds

Cards (12)

  • What are the sub-atomic particles in an atom?
    Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
  • What sub-atomic particles are in the nucleus?
    Protons and neutrons
  • What is the relative charge of an electron?
    -1
  • What is the relative charge of a proton?
    +1
  • What is the relative charge of a neutron?
    0
  • What is an atom?

The building blocks of everything (matter). They are a pure substance made from only one type of atom
  • What is an element?
Elements are a single type of atom. They can be individual atoms or can bond with other elements which are the same type of atom.
  • What is a compound?
A compound contains two or more types of atoms (elements) which are chemically bonded together
  • What is a molecule?
A small group of atoms strongly bonded together. They can be the same type of atom (e.g. elements) or different types (e.g. compounds)
  • Where can the formula for a single atom be found?
    On the periodic table
  • How do you know how many atoms are in an element?
    Using the subscript number
  • What is a mixture?

Two or more types of atom that are not bonded
