Capillary System

Cards (19)

  • what are blood circulatory systems
    systemic
    pulmonary
    specialised circulatory system
  • what is specialised circulatory system

    portal
    coronary
    foetal
  • what is transported in circulatory system
    O2 (RBCs)
    Nutrients
    CO2
    Metabolic waste
    Cells of Immune System (WBCs)
  • systemic circulation
    - high pressue system (arterial side)
    - takes oxygen rich blood from the left side of the heart to the body tissues
    - returns oxygen poor blood from the tissues to the right side of the heart.
  • pulmonary circulation
    low pressure system
takes blood low in oxygen from the right side of the heart to the lungs
takes blood rich in oxygen from the lungs to the left side of the heart.
  • what is lymphatic system
    consists of:
    network of lymph vessels
    lymph
    lymphatic tissues and organs
  • the function of lymphatic system
involved in the body's defence mechanisms
provides a mechanism for the drainage of interstitial fluid.
  • interstitial fluid
fluid moves from the arterial end of the capillary into the intersitial space
fluid moves from the interstitial space back into the capillary at the venuous end
  • capillary blood pressure CPB
pushes the fluid out of the capillary into the interstitial fluid (taking nutrients, gases etc) filtration.

    decreases with progression along capillary

greater than BCOP at the arterial end.
  • Blood colloid osmotic pressure
pulls fluid back into capillary (bringing wastes, gases etc) reabsorption.
    mainly due to plasma proteins.

    - remains constant

greater than CBP at the venous end.
  • how much fluid is reabsorbed and the the consequence of the remaining not being absorbed?

    almost 85 percent.

remaining must be removed from the interstitial space otherwise oedema will result.
  • the removal of excess interstitial fluid
lymph capillaries are blind ended tubes that are located adjacent to capillary beds.

the excess interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic capillary and is called lymph.

lymph passes through the lymphatic circulation and returns to the blood system.
  • lymphatic drainage
from lymph capillaries leading to lymph vessels to bigger vessels. lymph trunks.

along the lymph vessels lymph nodes filter the lymph.

lymph trunks lead to either thoracic duct or lymphatic duct
  • what is right lymphatic duct do:

drains lymph from the right side of the head & neck & thorax and right upper limb.

    to right subclavian vein
  • what does thoracic duct do

drains lymph from the rest of the body to left subclavian vein.
  • the fluid names throughout the journey?
    - plasma when in capillaries.
    - interstitial fluid when in interstitial space.
    - lymph when in lymph capillaries.
