identifying non-metal ions

Cards (6)

  • test for a CARBONATE ion
    • add dilute acid
    • carbondioxide will be produced , effervesence will be observed ( this doesnt prove that carbondioxide has been produced )
    • to test for carbondioxide bubble it in lime water if its cloudy it means co2 is present meaning the starting solution contained carbonate
  • halide ion
    1. add dilute nitric acid
    2. add silver nitrate solution
    3. each halide produced a precipitate of silver halide
  • silverCHLORIDE - white precipitate
  • silverBROMIDE - cream precipitate
  • silverIODIDE - yellow precipitate
  • sulphate
    • add dilute HCL acid
    • add barium chloride
    • white precipitate
