The break-up of the
Soviet Union

Baltic states

Latvia

independent

1920s

but were conquered by
Stalin

1940.

, large popular
front movements

Estonia

sovereign
and began educating citizens about the
Estonian language.
Lithuania declared
independence

, but they failed.

political protest.
The event led to
