  • the cognitive approach argues depression is caused by external thinking processes
  • Ellis' ABC Model- An activating event in depressed patients, such as failed tests, leads to an irrational belief such as 'I am a failure' which then leads to a negative consequence- the behavioural, emotional and cognitive characteristics of depression. Therefore depression is caused by irrational beliefs about the environment.
  • Beck's negative triad- Faulty information processing of the environment causes an individual to have a negative view of the self (negative self-schemas such as 'I am a horrible person'. Therefore depression is caused by irrational beliefs about the environment.
  • becks negative triad- three schemas with a persistent automatic negative bias, the self- negative self schemas, the world- thinking people are hostile or threatening, The Future- thinking things will always turn out badly, the negative triad develops in childhood but provides the framework for persistent biases in adulthood, leading to cognitive distortions, perceiving the world inaccurately, eg overgeneralisation.
