• Is a part of the lower limb between the knee and the ankle and consist of 2 bones:

  leg
• leg consist of 2 bones

  1. tibia
  2. fibula
• also known as the shin bone

  The larger of the two

  Supports most of the weight of the legs and body.

  tibia
• Fibula acts as a support to the tibia.
• Consists of seven tarsals (tarsal=sole of the foot) bones


  foot
• articulates with tibia and fibula to form the ankle joint

  Articulates with the calcaneus and navicular.


  talus/tarsus
• talus/tarsus (ankle)
• The largest and longest bone in the foot

  Located inferiorly to the talus and supports the talus.


  calcaneus (heel)
• Boat shaped

  Lies between the talus posteriorly and cuneiforms anteriorly

  navicular
• Round end of the bone fitting snugly within another bone.

  ball and socket
• The ball and socket joint moves bones multiaxially.
• ball and socket: It contains fluids that prevents bones from sliding past each other.
• Movement of joints in one direction or uniaxially.

  allows flexion and extension

  hinge
• Bone resting atop another bone permitting free movement

  pivot joint
