  • Failure to function adequately.
    Where an individual fails to cope with the demands of everyday life. e.g not maintaining personal hygiene.
  • Deviation from social norms.
    Where an individual fails to behave in a socially acceptable way.
  • Deviation from ideal mental health.
    Where an individual fails to meet Jahodas (1958) 6 criteria for good mental health: positive attitude towards the self, self actualisation, autonomy (independence), resistance to stress, environmental mastery and accurate perception of reality.
  • Statistical infrequency.
    A behaviour which is rare/uncommon as most people don’t have it.
