  • Adjectives are describing/modifying words. They are used to 'modify' nouns.
  • Comparatives- when adjectives are used to make comparisons e.g. hotter, bigger.
  • Superlatives- as above, but usually to determine the highest or lowest specification of something e.g. greatest, biggest, hottest, worst.
  • Adjectives can be used in two positions: before a noun (attributive) and after a copular verb (predicative).
  • Proper nouns-Usually capitalised and refer to specific people and places, e.g. Paris, Andrew, Venus
  • Common Nouns- are less specific and refer to types of people, places, feelings, e.g. city, man, planet, excitement
  • Common Nouns- Concrete -refer to things that exist physically - things that we can see and feel: computer, hand, house, tiger.
  • Common Nouns - Abstract- refer to things that do not exist physically -- to feelings, ideas, qualities: friendship, sadness, democracy
  • Common Nouns - Collective- refer to groups of people, animals or objects: team, family, flock.
