• People are religious as it offers a certainty in an uncertain world (Bauman) and removes risk (Beck)
• Lyotard argues there is a general disbelief in the metanarratives as none can claim a monopoly of truth
• Ritzer argues people are rejecting the structural approach, and people now adopt a more individual approach to understanding the world
