  • EXPONENT
    • also referred to as powers or indices 
    • the number of times a number is multiplied by itself
  • ZERO RULE
    • any term with zero as an exponent is equal to one
  • IDENTITY RULE
    • Number raised to 1 is the number itself
  • PRODUCT RULE
    • two numbers with the same base, add the exponents.
  • QUOTIENT RULE
    • two numbers with the same base, subtract the exponent of the denominator from the exponent of the numerator
  • POWER RULE
    • multiply the exponent values.
  • NEGATIVE EXPONENT
    • Invert the base to change a negative exponent into a positive.
  • POWER OF A PRODUCT RULE
    • When any base is being multiplied by an exponent, distribute the exponent to each part of the base.
  • POWER OF A QUOTIENT RULE
    • exponent outside of the parentheses is distributed to each term in the numerator and each term in the denominator.
  • FRACTION  EXPONENT
    • the numerator is the power and the denominator is the root.
