Sigmund Freud

• specialised in treating neurotic disorders (e.g. hysteria) for they had no physical cause
• studies lead him to believe in psychic determinism, which is the idea our behaviour is not determined by psychological factors
• this perspective seeks to explain human behaviour as an interaction between innate drives and early experiences -> interactionalist approach = explains human behaviour through the interaction of internal and external factors
• behaviour is exploited in terms of its 'dynamic' i.e. forces that drive the indiv to behave the way they do
