The Inspector

Cards (2)

  • "Sharp ring of the doorbell"
The timing of the Inspector’s entrance is significant as there is a “sharp ring” of the bell just as Birling is lecturing his family about his Capitalist values, stating that a “man has to mind his own business.” This almost suggests that Birling has summoned the Inspector to prove the exact opposite of this selfish viewpoint and this is a clear indication to the audience that Birling’s arrogant views on society are wrong. The ‘sharp ring’ also cuts through the carefree atmosphere of the evening. audience – and alerts audience to a change in atmosphere and mood.
  • "Plan, darkish, suit"

His manner of dress creates a sense of mystery – implies there is a supernatural element to this character. He is dressed in a ‘darkish suit’ – this links to Eva Smith’s death, as if dressed for a funeral. Also, presents him as classless (socialism).
