  • what is the nervous system?
the nervous system is a specialised network of cells in the human body. it consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system.(PNS) communicates using electrical signals. it has two main functions, to collect process and respond info in the environment and to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
  • what is the central nervous system?
CNS consists of the brain, centre of all conscious awareness, and the spinal cord, the extension of the brain that passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the peripheral nervous system.
  • what is peripheral nervous system? (PNS)

sends information to the central nervous system from the outside world, and transmits messages from the central nervous system to muscles and glands in the body.
    the PNS is subdivided into:
    autonomic nervous system (ANS)
    somatic nervous system (SNS)
  • what is the somatic nervous system? (SNS)

governs muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
  • what is the autonomic nervous system? (ANS)

governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
