  • Rev. Bernardino Nozaleda, the Archbishop of Manila, recalled: “During that day, although Rizal did not reject [the Jesuits], he persisted in his errors contrary to the Catholic faith.… However, at the last hour, Rizal abjured, in writing, his religious errors.”
  • On May 18, 1935, 39 years after it had vanished the day Rizal was shot, the "original" copy of Rizal's "retraction" was discovered in the archdiocesan archives

    The first text was published on December 30, 1896, the day of Rizal's execution, in La Voz Española and Diario de Manila.
  • The second text appeared in Barcelona, Spain, on February 14, 1897, in the fortnightly magazine La Juventud; it was written by an unnamed author who revealed himself fourteen years later as Fr. Balaguer.
  • The third text which is said to be the "original" text was discovered by Father Manuel Garcia, C.M. on May 18, 1935, almost four decades, 39 years to be exact, of his disappearance.
  • The fourth text is the short formula of the retraction which appeared in El Imparcial on the day after Rizal’s execution.
  • He joined the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1890 and went to the Philippines in 1894.
    He was assigned to Ateneo Municipal.

  • One of the Jesuit priests who visited Rizal during his last hours in Fort Santiago claimed that he managed to persuade Rizal to denounce Masonry and return to the Catholic fold.

  • According to his testimony, Rizal woke up several times, confessed four times, attended a mass, received communion, and prayed the rosary, all of which seem out of character.

  • He was a British civil servant, a writer, and a traveler.
    He wrote and published a book entitled, "Rizal: Philippine Nationalist and Martyr'' by Oxford University Press in 1956.
