cogntive interview

    Cards (8)

    • what is the cognitive interview?
A method of interviewing eyewitnesses to help them retrieve more accurate memories
    • what are the four main techniques used in cognitive interview?
      report everything
      reinstate the context
      reverse the order
      change the perspective
    • explain reporting everything as a technique for cognitive interview
      > witnesses encouraged to recall every memory of the event - seemingly trivial memories could be important or could lead to the trigger of other important memories
    • explain reinstating the context as a technique for cognitive interview
      > the witness should return to the crime scene 'in their mind' + imagine the environment + their emotions - related to retrieval failure
    • explain reverse the order as a technique for cognitive interview
      > events should be recalled in a different order from the original sequence - this prevents people reporting their expectations of how the event must have happened rather than reporting actual events
      > it also prevents dishonesty as it is harder to lie when reversing the order
    • explain changing the perspective as a technique for cognitive interview
      > witnesses should recall the incident from another persons perspective eg. how it would have appeared to another witness or the perpetrator
      > this disrupts the effects of expectations + the effect of the schema on recall
    • give on strength of cognitive interview
      SUPPORTING EVIDENCE:
< meta-analysis combining 55 studies comparing CI with a standard police interview --> CI saw a 41% increase in accurate information compared with a standard interview--> this shows that CI is an effective technique in helping witnesses to recall information that is stored in the memory (available) but not accessible
    • give one limitation of cognitive interview
      TIME CONSUMING:
< CI takes more time and training than a standard police interview
