  • What does reality testing do?
    Aims to identify faulty interpretations through a series of discussions and challenges
  • What is normalisation?
    When therapists share that it is ‘normal’ to have hallucinations and delusions in some circumstances explaining that hearing voices is an extension of the ordinary experience of thinking in words
  • What is family therapy?
    A psychological therapy carried out with all or some members of a family with the aim of improving the communication within and reducing the stress of living as a family
  • Family therapy: Reduces negative emotions
    Aims to reduce levels of expressed emotion. Reducing stress is also important to reduce likelihood of relapse
  • Family therapy: Improves the family’s ability to help
    Encourgaes family to form a therapeutic alliance whereby they all agree on the aims of strategy. Therapist also tried to improve family’s beliefs about and behaviour towards SZ. A further aim is to ensure that family members achieve a balance between caring for the SZ and maintaining their own lives
