• Augustine + Schleiermacher: conscience as the innate voice of God
• • God implants knowledge of right conduct
  • listening to conscience is hearing the voice of God
  • because of its source, conscience must always be obeyed without question, taking priority over everything else
• issues with Schleiermacher + Augustine's approach:

  • it suggests a selective God - he talks to some but not others
  • people who claim to have been spoken to directly by God come up with different answers
  • we can't be sure that the guidance comes from God, instead of unconscious subjective views
