Removal of urea

Cards (5)

  • Proteins and the amino acids they are broken down into can't be stored by the body so any excess amino acids are converted into fats and carbohydrates which can be stored
  • This occurs in the liver and involves a process called deamination
  • What is deamination?
The removal of an amino group from a molecule.
  • Ammonia is produced as a waste product from this process
  • Ammonia is so toxic so it's converted into urea in the liver
It's then transported to the kidneys where it's filtered out of the blood and excreted from the body in urine
