  • "Jekyll became too fanciful for me"

suggests that Dr Lanyon is traditional and remains stanch in the rationale and integrity of traditional science. His role within the text is as a foil to Jekyll and he is used to highlight the absurdities in some of Jekyll's experiments. It also foreshadows the end of the novella, when Hyde becomes all-consuming and Jekyll can no longer control him.
  • "unscientific balderdash"

is how Lanyon describes Jekyll's experiments (which results in the creation of Hyde). While they are both scientists, Lanyon prefers materialistic science whereas Jekyll dabbles in a more metaphysical side of the topic. He acts a foil to Jekyll, showing the extremes of scientific practice and belief.
  • "a hearty, healthy, dapper, red-faced gentlemen"

this early description of Lanyon contrasts with the later one, after he has witnessed the transformation, where he is said to be "shaken to the roots" and "sickened at it" therefore implying that this will have a permanent effect on him and then leads to his untimely death.
  • "I am quite done with that person"

Dr Lanyon is stubborn as he will not forget or forgive Dr Jekyll for his experiments with Hyde. This shows he is stubborn as he refuses to even say Jekyll's name, and so illustrating that it has no meaning or value to him. He doesn't forgive easily.
