Care of Patient after Hip Replacement

  • Total Hip Replacement - replacement of both acetabulum and head of femur with prostheses
  • Post op Management of Total Hip Replacement
    • Put between legs: 2 pillows especially when turning to sides
    • MAINTAIN PRINCIPLE: Abduction
    • AVOID  PRINCIPLE: AdductionExternal Rotation, Hip flexion
    • HOB: Flat most of the time
    • Max HOB: 20-30 angle
    • Keep feet flat on the floor
    • Toilet Seat or chairs: Raised - NEVER low
    • DO NOT cross legs
    • NEVER bend down to put on shoes - use "SLIP ON" shoes
    • Gait: Three-point walking gait to AVOID weight bearing
    • Assess for Infection
    • Ambulate when: 2-4 days post op
