Aims and hypotheses

    Cards (10)

    • What is the criteria for stating aims?

-needs to be developed before carrying out research
-general statement which outlines what is being investigated
      -purpose of investigation
    • What is the criteria for a hypothesis?

-constructed to show research that doesn't support the experimental /alternative hypothesis
      - have a conclusion for results
    • What is the purpose for the null hypothesis?

-constructed to show research that doesn't support the experimental /alternative hypothesis
      - have a conclusion for results
    • When would an experimental hypothesis be used?

-when an experimental method is used
      - when there is an IV and DV
    • What does and experimental hypothesis do?

suggest there is a relationship between phenomena
    • When is a non-experimental hypothesis used?

when there is no IV or DV
    • What does a directional hypothesis do?

predict the direction of results (how much/fast/less/slow)
    • When is a directional hypothesis used?

when there is lots of previous research into the area so the researcher can make an informed decision
    • What is a non-directional hypothesis?

States the relationship exists, but not the direction (how fast/slow/more/less)
    • When is a non-directional hypothesis used?

when there is minimal / no research around that area (limited in previous research)
