  • Corrupt Bargain
    John Quincy Adams won over Andrew Jackson and Clay was made Secretary of State even though Jackson won the most votes. The speaker of the house, Clay, didn’t like Jackson so he supported Quincy Adams and may have had to do with the Congress electing Adams
  • Five Civilized Tribes
    • Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Seminoles
    • “Civilized” tribes, still pushed off their land
  • Spoils System
    • Political supporters were given public office as a reward for their support
    • Jackson believed it was democratic because it turned over jobs, not letting people become entrenched in their positions
    • Produced many bribes

  • Force Bill
    • “Bloody Bill” that authorized the president to use the army and navy, and if necessary, to collect federal tariff duties
  • Indian Removal Act
    Jackson decided that the Indian tribes that were left in the east should move west past the Mississippi River
  • Trail of Tears
    • Georgia said that it had authority over Indians and their land so those Native Americans were forced to march west
    • Cherokees called this the Trail of Tears and many of them died
  • Bank War
    • Jackson vetoed the recharter bill for the Bank of the United States. This veto was controversial because the Supreme Court had declared the Bank to be constitutional yet Jackson vetoed it on the grounds that it was unconstitutional, going above the court
    • Jackson wanted no federal money in the vaults of the Bank of the US to sink the bank
  • Pet Banks
    • State banks where federal money was now sent. Paper money was now being printed abundantly to give out loans, which led to unreliable money/credit.
  • Specie Circular
    • Introduced by Jackson to force buyers of government land on the frontier to pay in hard money, not credit, in an effort to make the economy run on more reliable cash
  • Panic of 1837
    • Economic crisis that plagued Jackson’s successor, Martin Van Buren 
  • Nicholas Biddle
    • President of the Second Bank of the US who struggled to keep the bank functioning when President Jackson tried to destroy it. Also was an American financier who was known for his bribes
  • Santa Anna
    • Mexican general/dictator who tried to crush the Texas revolt and who lost two battles to Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War
