  • Cornwall is located in the South West of the UK.
  • Large businesses may be unwilling to locate in Cornwall as there are no motorways or early transport links, so there aren't as many customers. Accessing and healthcare may also be difficult because of poor transport links.
  • Causes of decline in primary jobs:
    • Decline in fishing, huge travellers have massively overfished the seas, reducing fish populations
    • Decline in farming, number of dairy cattle has decreased by 60%, since 2000. Falling milk prices due to supermarkets driving down prices means that many have had to give up dairy farming.
    • Decline in mining, in 1960 over 10,000 people were employed in China, but there are cheaper clays overseas so there are less than 1000 jobs. The landscape has been left ugly and the last tin mine closed in 1998 due to overseas competition.
  • Problems in Cornwall include:
    • Buses serve 20% of the villages but there are only 3.4 a day.
    • The main hospital in Truro provides a wide range of treatment but it is 30 miles away from some parts of Cornwall.
    • Only 38% of the villages have a doctors surgery, only open one day a week.
    • Young people must sometimes travel over 30 miles for sixth form, which is very expensive.
  • Rural diversification is the development of methods of income generation (making money) that are in addition to or instead of traditional rural income sources, such as farming. Often necessary due to decline in the economy.
  • Cornwall faces the challenges of second home purchases driving up the cost of housing, pricing out the locals. The Eden Project does not help with this, as it has increased the number of tourists, who require accommodation - driving up housing prices.
  • Cornwall faces the challenge of decline of primary employment (fishing, farming and mining) has led to few job opportunities. The Eden Project has helped with this as it has made 700 jobs available and 3000 all over Cornwall.
  • Cornwall faces the challenge of most jobs being seasonal, existing in tourism and being low paid. The Eden Project is not seasonal and offers jobs all year round, tackling this issue.
  • Cornwall faces challenges of long travel times to access healthcare and education, due to being so remote. The Eden Project does not help with this as 97% of the Eden Project's visitors arrive by cars.
