• Causes of pollution in rivers:

  1.  Agricultural runoff
  2. Historical waste (water running through old minds polluted by metals)
  3. Run off from roads (salt oil and fuel)
  4. Sewage released into rivers during time of heavy rain
• why is managing water quality in the UK a challenge:

  • Large land area with a large number of rivers to monitor
  • Many farms border rivers it can be hard to identify which farm is responsible
  • Monitoring and water treatment is expensive
