sampling -

    Cards (9)

    • what are the strengths of self - selected sampling?
better ethically as participants are volunteering themselves so are more likely to have consent.
    • what is self selected sampling?

when researchers ask for volunteers (usually done via advert).
    • what are the strengths of opportunity sampling?

time - efficient as it requires little to no prior planning.
    • what are the weaknesses of opportunity sampling?

there is a possibility that the sample may under represent as it depends on whoever is there at the time of the study taking place.
    • what is random sampling?

you give every member of the target population an equal chance of being chosen to be in your sample (e.g. pulling names out of a hat).
    • what are the strengths of random sampling?

equal chance of being chosen for the study - no researcher bias.
    • what are the weaknesses of random sampling?
      • chance the sample may not be representative as it could by chance select participants that are similar (e.g. race, gender, personality).
      • time consuming.
    • what is opportunity sampling?

you use only members of the target population who are available to you at the time you do the study.
    • what are the weaknesses of self - selected sampling?
      • opportunity for there to be bias if researchers are over subscribed with participants - may end up picking the ones they think will fit their hypothesis.
      • unrepresentative sample as similar types of people may offer to volunteer and may miss other types of people.
