  • Charles I - executed on in January 1649
  • After the execution parliament abolished the monarchy
  • This caused conflict in Scotland because of the changed in religion (protestant -> catholic)
  • Non-Anglican protestants were either Presbyterians or Independants
  • A wall was built onto of the pulpitum screen, the two sides were known as Peter's east and Peter's west
  • To allow access to peters east a wall was adapted in the Speke Chantry to make a doorway
  • The monarchy was restored in 1660
  • During the restoration the doorway was sealed and wall taken down
  • 1665 the organ was rebuilt by John Loosemore
