irregular objects

• step 1 :

  place displacement can on a brick
• step 2:

  place an empty beaker under the spout and fill the can with water (water should be dripping from the spout)
• step 3 :

  wait until water stops dripping and replace the beaker with a measuring cylinder
• step 4:

  take your object and measure the mass on top pan balance
• step 5:

  lower object slowly into displacement can until it is completley submerged
• step 6:

  collect all the water that comes out the spout into the measuring cylinder
• step 7 :


  measure and record the volume of the water collected (this is equal to the volume of the object)
• step 8

  calculate and record density (mass/volume)
• step 9 :


  repeat steps for other objects (remember to refill the can fully each time)
