Bar mitzvah

  • Celebrated by Jewish males at the age of 13, they are entering adulthood
  • After a bar mitzvah the boy can then be part of a minyan and is now expected to obey the mitzvot in the Torah
  • The term “bar mitzvah” literally means “son of the commandments’, the boy will have learned Hebrew so he can read from the torah in the synagogue
  • A synagogue ceremony takes place in the Shabbat after the 13th birthday
  • The boy is called up to the human and recites a blessing on the Torah, he reads a section of the Torah in Hebrew
  • Family friends will be present and the father will give a statement of thanks to God
  • The Jewish bog may now wear the tefillin and a part will often follow the religious ceremony
  • Public demonstration of the period of preparation and learning
    Can take place in a synagogue or at a special place e.g. Westem Wall.
    The male is called to the bimah to recite and read from the sater lorah.
    Passage (portion) will be read in Hebrew.
    Family and mends will watch the ceremony-
    Father usually recites a statement thanking God.
    Family celebration as a part of the ceremony-The male must be at least 13 years old
