  • 2 Commonly used Theoretical Frameworks
    1. Trait Framework
    2. Interaction Framework
  • Trait Framework
    • B = f(P)
    • Primary behaviour we see as a function of the traits a person brings
  • Examples of Social Psych Personality Traits - Research Tools
    • Questionnaires (multiple traits):
    • Big Five personality traits
    • Good measurement tool
    • California Psychological Inventory (CPI)
    • Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF)
    • Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI)
    • But NOT designed for sport & exercise
  • Social Psych Personality Trait Questionnaires are used as a research tool but not designed for sport & exercise
  • Examples of Social Psych Personality Traits - Research Tools
    • Questionnaires for research
    • But NOT designed for sport & exercise
    • Choose the right tool for the right job
    • How sport impacts personality would be good tools but if used these to show how they achieve in sport (may not be appropriate)
    • Good questionnaires designed for what they’re meant to do
  • Interaction Framework [B = f(PxE)]
    1. State & Trait Measures (single trait; eg, anxiety) eg. State/Trait Anxiety Inventory
    2. Situation-Specific Measures, eg.  Exam/Test Anxiety
    3. Sport-Specific Measures, eg.  SCAT & CSAI-2
    4. Using Psychological Measures - guidelines for safe, systematic, & ethical use of psych measures of personality (do’s & don’ts)
    • Influence of situation/environment & person/traits
  • Interaction Framework [B = f(PxE)]
    • State & Trait Measures (single trait; eg, anxiety) eg. State/Trait Anxiety Inventory
    • Trait = part of personality
    • State = at the current time, momentary feeling
    • Influenced by the environment
    • What is it about situation that influences their state
    • Is a bit of both
  • Interaction Framework [B = f(PxE)]
    • Situation Specific Measures, eg.  Exam/Test Anxiety
    • May only be anxious about certain situations
    • Different things that get us anxious
  • Interaction Framework  [B = f(PxE)]
    • Sport Specific Measures, eg.  SCAT & CSAI-2
    • Sport by definition is competitive, that competition can cause competition anxiety
    • Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT)
    • Competitive State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2)
    • How you feeling at this very second
    • Martens also gave definition of competition, came across when finding anxiety related to sport
  • Interaction Framework [B = f(PxE)]
    • Using Psychological Measures - guidelines for safe, systematic, & ethical use of psych measures of personality (do’s & don’ts)
    • Rules (do’s & don’t)
    • Don’t use them as a major source for selection (as done by American Football previously)
