  • Motivation Definition - General definition:
    • "Anything that impels a person to action"
    • To do something, then to engage (intensity), & if you continue to do it 
    • Different acts of motivation 
    • Do influence each other 
    • Other things that influence our decisions to
  • Motivation is Reflected in:
    1. The selection/direction of behaviour
    2. The intensity of the behaviour 
    3. The persistence of the behaviour 
    • Motivation isn't enough on its own
  • Key Points of Motivation 
    • Motivation is necessary but not sufficient condition for performance/participation
    • It energises, selects, & directs action
  • Key Points of Motivation 
    • Without sufficient motivation a participant won't perform well, or train/practice effectively
    • Training motivation: how long do you train (longer than performance/competition)
    • Motivates to train 
  • Key Points of Motivation 
    • Carrot/reward = easier to be motivated 
    • How do you helps others motivate themselves 
    • You can only motivate yourself
    • Others can help, but they can’t give it to you 
    • What interests/motivates you may be different to others

  • Different Aspects of Motivation 
    • Achievement Motivation 
    • Intrinsic Motivation
    • Intrinsic = internal/inside 
    • Do it bc/ you enjoy it
    • Extrinsic Motivation
    • Extrinsic = external/outside
    • Got a reason, but don’t enjoy it (100% extrinsically motivated) 
    • Do it bc/ wanna get paid, pride, make certain team 
    • Normally a mixture of both (intrinsic & extrinsic)
  • Different Aspects of Motivation 
    • Exercise Adherence
    • Adherence = commitment, to want to continue (stick to it)
    • Less than 50% get enough exercise a week to get the health benefits, even though know the benefits 
    • Participation Motivation
    • Drop-outs in Sport
    • Go play a different sport (why change?)
