  • SALTAPS - protocol for the assessment of a sporting injury : stop, ask, look, touch, active, movement, passive movement and strength test
  • SALTAPS
    Stop - stop the game if a player is injured and observe the injury
    Ask - ask question about the injury
    Look - search for signs of injury such as bruising, swelling and pain
    Touch - identify painful regions and inflammation
    Active movement - ask player whether they can move the injured area
    Passive movement - gently move area through full range of motion
    Strength test - ask player to put pressure on injured area
  • PRICE - protocol for the treatment of acute injuries; protection, rest ince, compression and elevation
  • PRICE
    Protection - protect from further damage; stop playing, use splints/crutches
    Rest - allow injury to heal and prevent further damage
    Ice - apply ice to reduce inflammation and pain
    Compression - use tear tape, crepe or stretch band to reduce swelling
    Elevation - raise injury above heart level to reduce blood flow to the area this decreasing swelling
  • Concussion 6R's - protocol for recognition of concussion; recognise, remove, refer, rest, recover and return
  • 6R's of concussion:
    Recognise - learn the signs and symptoms of concussion
    Remove - remove player from field of play immediately
    Refer - refer to qualified healthcare professional
    Rest - rest from exercise until symptom free
    Recover - fully recover and be symptom free before returning to play
    Return - symptom free and written authorisation
  • GRTP (Graduated Return to Play Programme)
    • concussion in World Rugby
    • players should not be forced to play until they have no ongoing symptoms, have fully recovered and have completed a GRTP.
