  • Freud claimed child development occurred in 5 stages, each of which is marked with a different conflict that the child must resolve in order to progress successfully to the next stage
  • Any stage that is unresolved can will lead to fixation where the child carries certain behaviours associated with that stage through adult life
  • During each stage, sexual energy (libido) is expressed in different ways and through different body parts
