  Only electrons in the outer shell.
• What is the 1st step?

  Look at the element on the periodic table. eg Na
• What is the 2nd step?

  Look at the noble gas element before it. eg Ne
• What is the last step?

  Represent the inner shells using the noble gas element. eg (Ne)3s^1
• What should you always remember?

  Always write full electron configuration unless asked to!
