  • Lipids are deposited under our skin for insulation and around organs such as the heart and kidneys for protection

  • What are the 2 tests for lipids?
    1. Sudan 3 test
    2. Ethanol test
  • What is the Sudan 3 test?
    1. Take 5ml of unfiltered sample
    2. Add 3 drops of Sudan 3 and shake
    3. If lipids are present a red layer will form at the top
  • What is the Ethanol test?
    1. Fill half a test tube will ethanol
    2. Add a small amount of lipid and shake well
    3. Fill half a second test tube with distilled water
    4. Pour the top of the ethanol tube into the distilled water tube and shake gently
    5. A positive test will show a cloudy white emulsion
