Endocrine System

Cards (3)

  • The Endocrine System
    • The endocrine system is in charge of body processes that happen slowly, such as cell growth
    • Faster processes like breathing and body movement are controlled by the nervous system
    • However, even though the nervous system and endocrine system are separate systems, they often work together to help the body function properly
    • The endocrine system produces, releases and reabsorbs hormones.
    • It’s two main functions are: to secrete the hormones which are required to regulate many bodily functions / to provide a chemical system of communication via the blood stream
  • Gland / Hormone / Role
    • Adrenal Gland / Adrenaline / key in the bodies fight or flight response
    • Pancreas / Insulin / controls blood glucose levels
    • Thyroid / Thyroxine / helps regulate metabolic rate, heart and digestive functions, muscle control, brain development, bone maintenance
    • Pineal Gland / Melatonin / maintains the body main circadian rhythm by inducing sleep
    • Testes and Ovaries / Testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone / controls the development of reproductive organs
    • Pituitary Gland / ACTH / the master gland - the hormones it releases control the release of other hormones
  • Nervous System - Carries information quickly but has a short lived and specific effect.
Endocrine System - Carries information slowly but has a longlasting and widespread effect.
