  • Gunpowder plot 1605
    • WHY? result of catholic disappointment of james 1, many catholics were hopefyl james would let them worship freely but many powerful members of james council were anti-catholic so laws against caths were more strict
    • PLAN? Robert Catesby wanted to blow houses of parliment and lead catholic rebellion. Guy fawkes filed a vault beneath parliment with 36 barrels of gunpwoder
    • DISCOVERY? an anonymous letter warned Lord Monteagle to not attent the opening of parliment, who took straight to Cecil. Vaults were then searched and Fawkes arrested.
  • CONSEQUENCES OF GUNPOWDER PLOT:
    • PLOTTERS? Fawkes tortured until he revealed the names.Rest of plotters escaped but the gov soldiers tracked them down and were killed. Rest guilty of treason and to be hung
    • CONSEQUENCES: All catholics= heretics. New laws & harsh punishments to deal w them> take part in protestant services, banned from working in legal profession, couldn't vote
    CHURCH - religious tensions still existed 70 years after reformation
    GOVERNMENT: created new strict laws to force conformity from the catholics, harsher punishments
