  • There are three divisions in the High court:
    Kings bench division
    Chancery
    Family
  • Claims will be heard in open court by a single judge of the High court, unless it is a family claim.
  • At the end of the hearing, the judge will decide who is liable, the compensation to be paid and who should pay for the court costs.
  • Kings Bench Division:
    The largest of the three Divisions.
    Claims over £100000 are heard here or complex cases over £50000.
    The specialists courts within the Kings Bench Division:
    • The Administrative Court-hears application for judical review and applications.
    • Case stated appeals in criminal cases decided at the magistrates court/crown court
  • The Chancery Division:
    Deals with business or land disputes over £100000
    Disputes over trust
    Contentious probate claims
    Disputes about partnerships matters.
  • Family Division:
    Generally heard in private
    Cases relating to the welfare of children under the children Act 1989
    Appeals from lower courts such as family proceedings court
    cases with a foreign element such as international child abduction, forced marriage and where a divorce has happened outside of England but disputing land in English land .
