    Significance: Both candidates received an equal number of votes, which made the house of representatives decided the winner. Follows Article 2 in the constitution. It was the first peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another.

    Significance: Resulted in the quasi-war between France and the US.

    What: A supreme court case where Marbury was promised a job as a lawyer in the government, but his paper didn't get delivered so he wasn't granted the job. Tried to sue James Madison.

    What: A land seal between the USA and France where the United States bought 827,000 square miles of land for 15 million dollars.
    Significance: Greatly expanded the territory of the USA by buying land west of Mississippi river. Doubled the size of the US. Jefferson had to use the elastic clause

    What: Prevented United States ships from trading with foreign ports, specifically Britain and France.
    Significance: Hurt the US economy more than it did British and the French. Made Jefferson highly unpopular.
