functionalist and neoliberalist perspective

Cards (6)

  • functionalists may disagree with home education to an extent as it provides inadequate social solidarity as homeschooled children are not learning how to be apart of wider society as children are still socialised with particularistic values based on ascribed status and birth order
  • functionalists argue that there might not be a clear distinction between particularistic values and universalistic values . the value consensus of society is weaker as they are not socialised into into it
  • role allocation could still occur as home schooled students education is personalised so it depends on what the parent wants and not the child
  • however homeschooling does not shift and sort children
  • Davis and Moore might argue that the inequality of home education is justified as inequality is necessary in society so parents have earned the right to homeschool
  • neoliberalists believe that home education is an option as parents have the power and choice to do so through parentocracy
