Depositional Landforms

    Cards (2)

    • Material is transported along the coast by longshore drift. Prevailing wind causes waves to hit the coast diagonally, and through a combination of swash(depositing material) and backwash (removing material) the material is transported along the coast. When the coastline changes direction, longshore drift continues in the same direction. As it goes further down the sea, it loses energy and starts depositing beach materials. Through this, an extended beach is formed which we call a spit.
    • 1.Chesil beach is formed by constructive waves which deposit more material onto the land with its swash than is removed with its backwash. 2. Due to the south westerly prevailing wind, the process of longshore drift occurs, where the swash goes up the beach at an angle, where as the backwash is perpendicular to the beach. This causes transportation in an easterly direction. 3. The longshore drift has created a bar across a bay creating a lagoon, and a tombolo connecting to Portland Island
